De Stijl will soon be released, and players will soon be able to experience the simple and elegant spirt of the De Stijl movement . . . but what exactly is the De Stijl movement?
What is De Stijl?
Beginning in 1917 and lasting until 1931, the De Stijl movement embraced an abstract, pared-down aesthetic centered in basic visual elements such as geometric forms and primary colors. Led by painters Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian, the movement emerged in the wake of the devastation from World War I as a way to remake society in the aftermath. Seeking a means of expressing a sense of order and harmony, the De Stijl artists incorporated a variety of artistic influences and media in an effort to develop an aesthetic that could be applied not only to fine and applied arts, but to other art forms as well such as architecture, urban planning, industrial design, and more.
The De Stijl journal was the first devoted to abstraction in art and promoted Mondrian’s Neo-Plasticism, or “new plastic art”, that he described as a reductive approach to artmaking that stripped away traditional elements of art, such as perspective and representation, utilizing only a series of primary colors and straight lines.
So there you have it: De Stijl in a nutshell. De Stijl releases on April 18, so get ready to craft your masterpiece!
